New Superintendent in Yellowstone bison need further assistance

Dan Wenk is the new head of the Yellowstone National Park. Please welcome him and ask him to protect the bison and to release the 500 captive bison in the Stephens Creek facility. Many of the bison cows there are close to calving. To have them locked up at this critical time could lead to the rapid spread of brucellosis in the bison population. That said, even the biologist of the National Parks.

The legal status of the wolf in MT and ID to the test

The process for the removal of wolves from the list of species conservation in Montana and Idaho was continued yesterday. Judge Molloy questioned here is whether the Rule 10 (j) of the species protection law, relied upon by the governments of individual states in firings of "problem wolves", by applying to it.
10 (j) permits the killing of wolves if they threaten livestock or wild animals. The law, however, permitted no public hunting. The scheme was the reintroduction of wolves to Idaho and Montana. At that time these wolf populations were placed under the special status of "experimental" and "non essential", which allowed the killing of problem wolves. This was a compromise to the otherwise applicable everywhere complete protection of wolves in order thus to be able to bring back the predators.
Judge Molloy will now examine whether those rules at all, is justified yet, since the wolf population of Idaho and Greater Yellowstone have grown together literally at a common population with the wolves from northwestern Montana and northern Idaho that are "not experimental" and are thus under stronger protection. The answer to this question will depend on the further protection status of the wolf.

Montana's governor will stop the slaughter of bison

Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer has now stopped the deportation of 525 bison to slaughter - for now. The reason could be due to shipment to brucellosis, the carriers of the bison are to be further disseminated. (No one speaks of the deer, the disease actually transmitted and distributed over the whole country.) The arrangement is initially valid for 90 days.

More than 500 bison in the Stephens Creek facility locked up - Protest!

Since last week, the Park Service has captured another 133 bison and housed in the enclosure at the edge of the park. The Buffalo Field Campaign and other animal protection groups to court before, however. The management of the national park does not care. They ignored their responsibility to protect the last wild bison real America, adding that it could quite (like 2008), to carry away this winter, more than 1,600 animals for slaughter.
But clearly show the protests yet effective. Plans for the immediate killing of the bison were stopped. The Park Service is consulting with his lawyers on Monday and will make a decision.

they can do:
  • Contact the director of the Yellowstone National Park Superintendent Colin Campbell and ask him to release the bison, from the Interagency Bison withdraw management plan and quit to threaten wildlife, pursue and kill . Email colin_campbell@nps.gov , Tel: (001) 307-344-2003
  • Contact Governor Brian Schweitzer of Montana and write him that you are a tourist are appalled about the treatment of bison. Remind him that we tourists come to his country to see wild bison alive and not locked up or dead. Email: governor@mt.gov
  • Sign the petition the U.S. National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis, stating that the non-functioning of the Interagency Bison Management should give up plan.

re very cold

Gerry flies back home tomorrow. Here, then, his last report. Thank you Gerry for all your reports.

It was a cold morning, between -38 and - 43 ° C in the Lamar Valley. I have kept the whole morning to look out the wolves, but always in vain. Except for two groups of coyotes today I had no wolf sightings.

winter in the Lamar Valley (Photo: Doug M.)

Other friends of mine still report: The Lamar
were again seen on the Ledge Trail and from Hitching Post. They are interested in an old cave bear, the located under a tree. The boys are very interested in the smell of Leitwölfin that fits not at all that. It solves by simply sitting down. Then a few minutes later, she makes it back in and flirts with 754, does not know where to take another, because as soon as he shows interest, he gets a reproachful look from the leader of the pack (755). More (yet), for the most exciting time has not yet begun. But 754 knows that 755 will be there when it matters.

The Lamar are back

What a difference. Clear skies, no wind and -16 ° C. From Nature Trail takes no Blacktail be seen. I only hear a distant howl. Further into the Lamar Valley. Today, it handles very much easier. The sun is coming and it is a wonderful day. On Confluence lots are photographers, but I do not see why. At the Hitching Post last Lamar are again visible on the Ledge Trail - all seven. We watch a couple of hours. Rick gets signals from the Agates on Elk Creek. During sleep, the Lamar we going and look for the Agates on Specimen Ridge. We find two groups of coyotes, no wolves. So back to Hitching Post, where the wolves are still sleeping in the same place. We spend the afternoon there. The Lamar wake up and greet each other. 754M is the leader of the pack is subjected 755m. He makes himself as flat as possible, rolls onto his back and presses his paws in the face. 755 goes to Leitwölfin "06", which presented him with its tail across its tail. But nothing happened. Against 17 clock I'm going home. (Gerry)

Grand Banks Across Atlantic

Testing Gnome3

Hi guys and girls.

this time i tried out the upcomming gnome3 desktop for you. Gnome3 will be released if there is nothing standing in the way, in april 2011. First i was really sceptical about gnome3 relasing relatively soon after it was official annunced. You know, will it be the same fail as kde4 was. These kind of thoughts. But than i got really impressed. If you want to make the experience yourself, you are welcome to do so. J ust download the iso here and get started .

Gnome3 did not just make a new release with all the new blinking and shining. They really did think about how to make a new dektop experience and how to design new interaction concepts and making things better and more userfriendly.

I would like to describe it this way: Think of a new way to organize and work with the desktop. The desktop no longer stands in the way when you want to work with applications. And applications no longer stands in the way when you want to organize your dektop.

When you click on the upper left side of the scren you can swith from running applications to organizing your desktop. In the activity panel you can now see what applications you are running. You can than move the windows across other virtual desktops which in gnome3 you are able to dynamicly add or remove by moving the mouse to the right side and clicking on the appearing plus or minus buttons.

You can also search for applications and start them right away or you click on the applications right next to the Windowbutton which leads you the gnome menu where you can as usual go through and select the application you
want to start. If you want to switch back to the applications just click of one of the application windows and you can continue working in with this program using a nearly fullsized window.

Your personal preferences can be set by cklicking on your user name on the top left side. you also will find your open chats and incomming messages. Surely this was adopted from ubuntu but has also greatly improved.

One last think to say. Setting up a personal desktop background is not working yet. You must install the xdg-user-dirs using

zypper in xdg-user-dirs

and Place the files in your ~/Pictures directory after logging the user out and in aagain. And sure there are still a lot of bugs and the preview should not be used in a productive environment but i hope most of them will be gone when the final version is out.

still snow in the snow storm

First, thank you again for all the comments.
There is always a nice feeling to know that you can not for the great void out there reported, but that real human beings look forward to.
Gerry of Scotland is still 2 more weeks in the park and will report in the next few days. Thank you Gerry.

Gerry
I am against 7 clock begin. When I came to Lava Creek, it has powerful snow with zero visibility on the Blacktail Plateau. I went further into the Lamar Valley in the hope of better weather. But it was worse. The Lamar Cox was in the Ice Canyon (in the northeastern part of Y). I stopped at Bridge Foot, came as Rick and said it was not worth to continue. The weather situation was getting worse. Wolf was one of the Watcher in the vicinity of the Soda Butte Cone went off the road.
I went back to the Blacktail. Here, the view was now better. The wolves were there, where they had stayed in last time, about 2 miles. After about an hour she got up and ran to the bison. The bison were tails raised high, and were ready for the wolves. As one got too close, he was driven away from them. Then came again dark clouds and we could see only up to the street. I went to Mammoth for lunch and an hour back. For a short time we could see 15 wolves (a black wolf emerges, and sometimes joins the 14-member Blacktail family). Again snow and zero visibility. We gave up the search and I drove very carefully back to Gardiner.

Dad Teaches Masterbate

Today was my last day in the park I am still a week with friends and then again from Valentine's home. In the meantime, Gerry will report what's new at the wolves and I'll set it here.
This morning it had in itself. We had warm -5 ° C but about 30 cm of snow in Silver Gate. The snow plow was not traveling, as I drove off. I had big problems to get through the deep snow, especially because many times the visibility was zero. From the Nature Trail was suddenly all clear and the sun shone. That was a good opportunity again to look for the Blacktail. But they did not show up. So that day ended without a wolf, but with two coyotes.

I find it difficult as ever to take leave from the park and into the world as loud back there. But I am also very particular, soon to see my dog, who enjoyed their spa vacation with my parents a lot.
Even Carol & Mark, Thomas and Christine, Rich and Linda drove back home. But other friends take the wolf Watcher job. In May, I'm back with a group back in time to hopefully see the puppies at the cave. By then, most prey animals have overcome the winter and have migrated to the valleys. There will be many starving animals that sufficient Food for the breeding of wolf and coyote pups offer.

Today:
two coyotes

Gerry has two wonderful photos of a very special "wild animal" made

That's the current situation of the bison:
The Park Service now has approximately 400 bison captured and housed in the Stephens Creek Facitlity. Some of the released Bisons are back there, because they naturally migrate back to the search for food out of the park.
27 more bison were killed by state officials and Indian fighters in the western and northern boundaries of the park. A bison died to the injuries he has sustained in the procedure of capturing and editing "in the enclosure. Another was shot by the Park Service. Overall, this makes the 130 dead animals.
If the Park Service - as planned - all located in the exhibit will kill bison, then more than 520 animals were dead, which is 15% of the total population. And it is just February. The killing will continue.

In today's edition of the Bozeman Chronicle has an article on the subject.
was then requested by the environmental and animal protection groups for an injunction to prevent the slaughter of animals. Next week a decision to be made.

Request Letter For Room Allowance

farewell love coyotes

For almost "tropical" -5 ° C this morning I drove into the park What a relief. Although it was snowing lightly, but there was no wind.
From Pebble Creek, we searched for all the Lamar. Rick had a good signal from them. We could not find them. I assume they were still at their old carcasses. Presumably, they have led the starving Schnöseline there, so that the child finally gets to eat something decent.
I watched for a while three coyotes in Round Prairie. One female and two males. One of the boys was clearly interested in her. She lay very close to their partner, while the interested male stalking slowly. It lacked only a few Meters, because of the coyotes man turned his head to him and looked right at him. As egg con flash shot the angry glance to rivals. The would-be Casanova veeery slowly and carefully turned his head away and lay down in the distance, as if he had never had any dishonest intent. He watched the couple just out of sight angles and strolled to them eventually.
Also on Round Prairie was this big bull bison grass and shoveled to the side. I'm glad that it has become warmer and see the animals so maybe more food again.

noon I went with Brian Connolly, author of Wolf diary , to Mammoth for lunch. On the way there we saw many bison on the road, this time mostly mothers with their children. Quite interesting was this: We drove very slowly through a bison jam with some up to one years old Bison children. When we were almost through and only had a small Bison in front of us, who was about to go to the side, back about a year two came galloping up older siblings and stood directly across the front of our car. You probably saw the small bison in danger. Then they accompanied him to the curb.
bison are fascinating in their social behavior of animals. Time and again we see how they turn a killed family member respect. They gather to sniff it, it, try it, to initiate and move to get up. Then stand around and look at it, as if to say goodbye. Like the elephants, who take their dead family members leave.
I have both the morning and the afternoon of the S-Curve and the Nature Trail Blacktail seen with 13 wolves. These two observation posts are notorious because they are so exposed, that there ever was a strong wind. Long as we could not stand it. We observed the wolves, as they ran through the Blacktail Plateau. Previously they had been chased away a piece of bison. The Buffaloes have no more tolerance for annoying wolves that they stand around in the way or even the Insolence have to want to attack them.
When the Blacktail have finally rolled up to sleep in the snow, I am also drove home.

Confluence on all day otters were seen. And of course we see here every day, the mighty bighorn sheep. The deer, of which I took, is a proud five deer cops who are also a few days ago on Confluence.

Today was a good day for towing services. Many cars have slid into the ditch. When I went earlier to Silver Gate, two cars were in the ditch, one with a snowmobile trailer. All young people who tell me before in a rapid Pace to overtake ...
When I stopped and offered help, she told me that the tow truck was on its way.
Bob Landis also has caught today morning. He came with his car too close to the margins and slipped.
Sometimes I think the snow poles are purposely too far away from the road ...

Replica Super Bowl Lombardi Trophy

reunification

The Lamar-Wolf family is complete again. To the great relief of all the lost wolf Watcher Schnöseline has returned home. All seven were in the morning amicably from Foot Bridge to look. They were not too far and placed on a hill facing the Cache Creek down to sleep. Until this afternoon at 15:30 clock, they have then no longer stirred from the spot. They were last lot, and then lost the excitement of the child. This must be small at first be digested.
Today was again a "Three-Dog-Day" with coyotes and foxes. The otters enjoyed in Trash Can many photographers with their curiosity.

The Wolf Watcher crew this morning by Bob Landis was invited to see his latest movie. It is a film about our Casanova, Wolf 302, "the story of a black wolf." A beautiful film with fascinating photographs, from the Bob seven (!) has turned years. And of course, Casanova is seen in all its beauty and charm.
The film comes out on DVD in April. I will, then when I'm back in the park, some - bring copies and give here, as they can be purchased - signed. Also, I can fix that now from this tour, laminated cards from the Lamar Valley and all wolf locations with special terms with. I will do it again here on the blog's attention.
Bob Landis at the presentation.
Gerry has seen from the Nature Trail in all 14 Blacktail both today and tomorrow afternoon. You have deer hunted in vain ..

Today:
7 wolves
2 foxes
three coyotes

I would like to take this opportunity to answer two questions, I have been asked in recent days.

first This time they have very few behavioral observations described. Why?
Although we mainly observed in the winter, the wolves from a distance, so is my ZEISS spotting scope powerful enough to see specific wolf behavior and recorded. About this behavior I will write in my next book. Therefore I would like to simply not go into details. Finally, the voltage to be maintained.

second Could you imagine working for other organizers of nature trips as a guide or would you do for another trip organizer of a wolf?
for over 15 years, I watch the Yellowstone wolves, and do for 10 years, the Wolf trips to Yellowstone. I have high ethical standards to the behavior of the participants. That is why I also have a very good reputation among biologists and may participate in the project. I do before every trip a preliminary meeting to explore the potential participants and to discuss matters with them. I keep my groups with a maximum of 4 participants deliberately small. The demand is huge and I'm looking at the preliminary meeting the Participants from that match in my opinion to the group and are suitable for the observations. All this I can not if I work with an organizer. To ensure

the high level, quality and uniqueness of traveling, so I prefer to remain independent.

How Does Ketoconazole 2% Work

snob whining and Kojotentag

Wish you were here ...

This morning we have had with our -40 ° C cold record. For the first time in my life I've let the Nissan to warm up while I was him for the ride in the Park had loaded. Everything was slow: brakes, steering, etc. Slowly all cars
have tire problems. The car of Mark and Carol suddenly had two plates - which was connected also with the low temperatures. Practically, as the Americans are so Laurie had a small Aufpumpgerät here, which is attached to the valve and into the cigarette lighter. With pure engine power is then pumped up the tires. After 20 minutes of noise and smell the tires were full again and we could continue.
Mark when inflating the tires. Here, where the nearest garage 2 ½ hours away, you have to be prepared for everything.

We had signals from Lamar in the north-east at Pebble Creek get there but found nothing. Looking through the spotting scopes and binoculars, was in itself a Herauforderung, for the warm eye immediately put a sheet of ice on the lens.
is cold, freeze even if the lashes.

We drove to Slough Creek. I stopped at the usual "pit stop" while the other drove. Then I heard from the Horizontal Forest in the Slough area is a howl. It sounded pathetic enough to know right away that it was the Schnöseline who was still looking for their family, Lamar, - and now for the third day. I ran up to Bob's Knob and found it already. She stood in the snow and howled and howled. Since there was no need for special knowledge of the sad wolf howl that now and in a hysterical shriek went over to hear that this was about eight months old she-wolf, the loneliest animal in the world. She ran a few steps, crying, listened, and ran, crying, listening. Her parents could not hear them, they were a day's journey far beyond the mountains. Sometimes they took on a track, which they followed. Maybe she was trying to find the trace of their parents. But she found only her own track. We have all suffered with it until it finally on the Slough Creek Campground disappeared to the northeast.
We had over an hour in arctic Cooling observed and were ready to warm us. I, I set off to Silver Gate, because I wanted to start from the ordered cards with the names of the localities.
the way I met the "lunatic" who runs around for a few days here. A young, plenty of confused man who usually wears a white jumpsuit, similar to the team of CSI at the crime scene. He wants to "sneak up" to the Wolves - without being noticed, of course. That may sound funny, but it is not, as he massively disrupts the wolves and other animals. His goal is as close as possible to get at all, by day and by night. In the summer, he also seems out at night to be and to look with a strong searchlight wolves. Cave areas are also a taboo for him. The rangers tried so far in vain, to catch him red-handed, for only then can they take action. Therefore, we have at the moment our radio traffic restricted to a minimum, because of course heard of "misleading" also from. He looks at me kind of scary: a mixture of naivete, autism, and madness.

Today was my Kojotentag. Eight of them I have observed. Slough was traveling on a couple who have been crying and occasionally shouted at like two old married people, to then then again to ensnare tenderly. In the afternoon, was at the Foot Bridge, a single coyote with two magpies as a bodyguard by his side. He had somewhere dug up a frozen piece of meat that the Magpies would like steals. The only thing he has left over were few Fleischkrumen.
rarely freezes Soda Bute so strong.

On the way home I run to Pebble Creek before the Thunder Turnout two deer on the road and look behind you to see. This is unusual behavior, pointing out that they were afraid of something. Shortly before I went on the road to the turnout, a small coyote. His face and his legs were bloody. I first thought of an accident until the boy nimbly leaped high snow bank and lying down about three feet away from me and blew. To this end, he "washed" his face as he pushed it through the snow. We all know from our dogs. He looked as if he had stuck with the legs and head in a fresh cadaver. I assume that Lamar did there near a kill. This also fits with Ricks signals. Well at least we know where we can start tomorrow morning with the search.

Finally, I've never visited Dan Hartman and bought two pictures of him. I make it very rare, from the Gallery " . Wildlife Along the Rockies "without one of the great photos from Dan to come out I've bought including this photo, which I find amazing and an example of the stamina and the incredible power of the bison:
This one was on looking for food in a narrow creek fall. The stream was always narrow and the snow is always higher, so jump out of the Bison could not. He turned around with tremendous effort and ran back, and then climb out to a broader point. amaze me and more and more fascinated by these animals

Update Bison . At the moment, are cooped up 300 bison in the Stevens Creek Facility

report by Gerry
Gerry does not live with the rest of us in Silver Gate but in Gardiner. He does so from the north into the park and inevitably, other sightings than we do, we do not sometimes come out from the Lamar Valley. Today it was morning
-23 ° C in Gardiner, Mammoth -28 and at Blacktail Plateau.
Calvin and Lynnette were at the S-Curve and had a wolf in the vicinity of the forest where the Blacktail have holes. Most of the wolves were in the woods. They let loose a group came out crying and all. We counted 12, but could be even more so in the trees. As we lost, we went higher to Nature Trail, where we could see them better. They chased two bison, but were not close enough to them. When the wolves moved on, they found more bison, which they wanted to hunt. This, however, turned around and chased after them in their turn by the wolf. We observed the wolves 8:00 to 11:30 clock until it is lying down.
On the way home I came back at 15:45 to long Nature Trail was over and another 20 minutes, the Wolves observe before they disappeared into a valley.
Thomas and Christine this afternoon in the Lamar Valley have observed otters. (Photo: T. & S. Bull).
